Aim Correctly
- Golf General Tips
Golf is a game of targets, so it is imperative that you are able to aim the club and your body correctly. Try this to get the proper alignment:
Stand behind the ball and pick out an intermediate target a few inches ahead of the ball. Aim the clubface at the intermediate target as you walk into the shot, keeping your feet close together. The key is to keep your eyes on the target the entire time as you set your feet, hips and shoulders parallel to the target. Let your eyes do the work for you.
Remember, great players spend more time looking at the target than looking at the ball.

Stop Topping Your Shots
- Golf Tips General
Maintaining a proper spine angle is a key to eliminating topped shots. During your setup, angle your upper body forward, keeping your back straight, while flexing your knees slightly.
You should get the feeling of pushing your backside out a bit, almost as though you are about to sit on a stool. Keep your head up and away from your chest.
That spine angle must be maintained throughout the backswing and downswing. The tendency for some recreational players is to pull up away from the ball during the backswing, making a return to the original setup position at impact very difficult, and usually resulting in a topped shot.

Weak Grip Causes Slice
- Golf Tips General
Are you a slicer? Have you ever thought that your grip might be what needs to be corrected?
A weak grip frequently will result in a slice (when the ball travels left to right). On a weak grip, a right-handed player's hands are rolled too far to the left -- toward the target.
A weak grip opens your shoulders at address, which usually results in an out-to-in swing path. The clubhead will cut across the ball and the ball will slice to the right.
Also, when you start with a weak grip, the clubface will be more apt to open on the backswing, making it very difficult to get it back to square before impact.
To correct a weak grip, rotate your hands back away from the target so that the "V" formed by the thumb and index finger on your right hand points to your right shoulder.

Adjust Ball Position
- Golf Tips General
To get the most efficient trajectory for each shot under normal playing conditions, it is a good idea to adjust the position of the golf ball from club to club.
You should play your longest club, the driver, off the inside of your left heel (for right-handed players). Play your shortest club, the sand wedge, in the middle of your stance. As the club gets longer, move the ball farther forward.

Setting Clubface
- Golf Tips General
Many recreational players are careful to align the clubface correctly when putting, but neglect to do so on all their other shots, from driver to wedge.
Aiming the clubface behind the ball correctly is an important part of the preshot routine. The next time you watch golf on television, look for players who line up the clubface to the target, behind the ball, before they take their final stance. What they're doing is getting the club in the proper position while maintaining an image in their mind's eye of where the ball is going to travel.
Once the clubhead is set, align your feet and your body correctly, relative to the position of the club.

Check Alignment Above Feet
- Golf Tips General
If you are having trouble hitting accurate shots, it is always a good idea to check your alignment. But do not stop at your feet; work your way up.
Your knees should be slightly flexed, your hips should be square to the target line, and most importantly, your shoulders should also be square.
If you are in the proper address position, both shoulders will be square to your target line. Your left shoulder will be slightly higher than your right, your left arm will be straight, but not tense, and your right arm will be totally relaxed.

Close Clubface Causes Hooks
- Golf Tips General
A hook occurs when the ball spins in a counter-clockwise direction. You impart this type of spin when the ball is struck with a closed clubface relative to your target line. For example, if you have a swing path that travels squarely down the target line at impact, but the clubface is closed, the ball will curve to the left of the target line. The more the clubface is closed, the more it curves to the left.
You'll see more of a curve with a driver because it has less loft than irons. Lofted clubs create more backspin and less sidespin.

How To Beat a Downhill Lie
- Golf Tips General
Here are some tips to combat the effects of a downhill lie:
Choose a more lofted club; the sloping terrain will deloft your club.
Set your body and weight toward the angle of the hill.
Ball position should not be past the middle of your stance because the club will return at a steeper angle.
Aim your body and clubface left of the target as the ball flight will be slightly left-to-right.
Remember to swing easy and relax to maintain good balance.
