CHIPPING
Golf Tips Short Game -
Get Comfortable
- Tips Short Game
When playing a chip shot from just off the green, there are many factors that need to be considered:
How far and how high will the ball travel?
How hard will you strike the ball and how much backspin will you impart?
What is the condition of the green -- its grain and firmness?
How will the contours of the green influence your shot -- both when the ball touches down, and also when it rolls?
Without spending an undue amount of time planning your shot, answer these questions and then pick a spot where you would like the ball to touch down.
It is also important to gain a certain level of comfort with the clubs you use around the green.

Choke Down
- Golf Tips Short Game
Choke down on the club an inch or two for chips.
Golf Tips Short Game -
Gravity
- Golf Tips Short Game
Let gravity do most of the work on downswing when chipping.
Golf Tips Short Game -
Wrists Ahead
- Golf Tips Short Game
To avoid "scooping" chips and pitches, keep wrists ahead of ball at impact.
Golf Tips Short Game -
No Right Hand
- Golf Tips Short Game
For distance control, do not let right hand take control of club head speed.
Golf Tips Short Game -
Keep It Low
- Golf Tips Short Game
Use a low running shot when conditions permit for more control.
Golf Tips Short Game -
Lower Body Still
- Golf Tips Short Game
Keep lower body still on short chips just off the green.

Long Grass
- Golf Tips Short Game
The longer the grass, the more likely the grass will wrap around the hosel, delofting the club. The ball should come out lower than normal.

Chip With The Wood
- Golf Tips Short Game
When your ball lies just off the green with no obstacle between you and the hole, use a fairway wood. A 5 or 7 wood is an excellent choice as they have enough loft to lift the ball out of grassy lies. The long shaft allows a compact swing kept low to the ground.
Using your putting stroke, keep the wrists firm at address and through the swing. Let the clubhead swing through the hitting zone as an extension of your arms so the clubhead goes straight through to the target. You will be amazed how much easier it is to chip from around the green with woods!

Practice Smart
- Golf Tips Short Game
Practice with different clubs to determine flight plus roll. I do not recommend using just one club around the greens and making a bigger swing for distance.

Long Long Grass
- Golf Tips Short Game
You can successfully play this shot like a green-side bunker shot when the grass is extremely thick. Remember to follow through and accelerate the club through the grass.

Conquer The Rough
- Golf Tips Short Game
Most public golf courses do not have thick rough near the greens, but some do. In this situation, a traditional chip shot probably will not be effective.
To get the best results in these conditions, try pitching the ball with a sand wedge or lob wedge. The heavy leading edge of the wedge will cut through the grass and will lob the ball softly onto the green.
The key to this shot is to make sure you take a long enough backswing that the weight of the clubhead alone will get the ball out of the deep grass, without having to apply much power with your hands and arms. If you do not take enough backswing, you will tend to force the club through impact, causing you to stub or chili-dip the shot.
Play the ball slightly back in your stance with a slightly open clubface. Take a long, slow backswing, allowing your wrists to break. Swing through the ball softly, letting the clubhead do the work, and control your distance with the length of your backswing.
Practice this shot until you find the swing length that works best for you.

Sand Wedge
- Golf Tips Short Game
If you do have to use a sand wedge to chip around the green, the key is to make sure both arms and the shaft of the club are fully extended toward the target on the follow-through. The tendency is to stop your hands at impact, creating a scooping motion with the clubhead. This will cause the ball to travel much less than the desired distance.
If you don't have to go over anything, chipping the ball with a lower-lofted club, such as a 6 or 7 iron, is a much better percentage shot. Even your miss hits should roll up around the hole.
PITCHING
Golf Tips Short Game -
Lob Shot
- Tips Short Game
Use a long swing with a loose grip.
Golf Tips Short Game -
Low Pitch
- Tips Short Game
For a low pitch shot the ball must be back in the stance, hands centered in the middle of the body. With the hands and the shaft leaned forward of the ball it de-lofts the club-face.

Right Hand Controls
- Tips Short Game
A pitch shot from about 30-50 yards can be difficult to master because it requires less than a full swing. For most players, distances on full-swing shots are easier to manage because golfers know how far they can hit each club.
You should learn to hit a pitch shot of about 30-50 yards based mostly on feel, using your right hand to control the swing and the distance of the shot. However, there are a few technical starting points that should get you on your way to executing this shot with more precision:
Your stance should be narrow (about shoulder width) and slightly open.
Position your hands ahead of the ball in your setup.
Choke down on the grip a bit for more control of the club action.
Start with your weight on your left side and keep it there throughout the swing.
Shorten your backswing, accelerate through the ball and limit your follow-through.
