Hot Shots Golf 3 certainly is not the most revolutionary addition to this popular series, but it does a good job of retaining the classic game play while updating the series to take advantage of the PlayStation2s more powerful hardware. The courses are beautiful, the animation is excellent as always, and the way the ball reacts to the wind, course elements, and irons and woods is realistic. When you screw up, there is never any doubt that it is your fault, not some flaw in the physics engine. Best of all, once a course is loaded, there is never any waiting around after a shot for a position update. The game is butter smooth. Perhaps the best thing about the game is its immediate accessibility. Players of any skill level can immediately grasp (if not master) the swing meter, where one button press starts the backswing, another determines power, and a third determines accuracy. It is all about rhythm and timing, and pressing on the directional pad during the backswing lets expert players control topspin to finesse their shots, fight a strong wind, or guide the ball through some nearby trees. Thanks to its photo-realistic golf-course backdrops and video-filmed players, it is indeed like watching golf on TV. The games makers used a complicated terrain-mapping system along with tons of photography to re-create three professional level courses: Royal County Down in Ireland, The Lost City in South Africa, and the Coeur d'Alene in the United States. The results are remarkable, at first glance they look as if they were stolen from a TV feed. The golfers themselves were made from digitized video of eight actual pro players from the PGA and LPGA, such as Tom Lehman and Vijay Singh. The digitized golfers are a bit less convincing, since they "freeze" in their swing animation after a ball is hit. It just looks odd.

The game, on the whole, as a result of these intelligent game mechanics changes has seemingly become easier and more user-friendly. Though still a proper challenge will certainly await you. This time around there are 6 courses along with 8 tour pros. The animation and sayings are much the same as the previous version, but there was never much wrong with that aspect, so it is forgivable.
A very fun, very accessible, very pretty golf game that deserves to be played & appreciated. Console gaming old-timers will be right at home.
