Club Head Types

The majority of golf putters will fall into 1 of 2 types of putter club heads. The two types are the Blade and the Mallet with many variations and many of them are considered as an Oversize putter. Most players will start using a blade type of putter but almost everyone will experiment with blades and mallets in all the shapes and sizes they are made now.
Blade
The traditional blade putter will be quite thin. This type of putter is less forgiving, meaning off center hits will be less accurate. The advantage of the blade traditional blade putter is that it is easy to line up the putt and they are very accurate when struck properly. Newer versions of the blade putter will have a cavity back. The cavity back allows for more weight around the bottom of the club allowing for more forgiveness on off center hits.
Mallet
A mallet putter head loosely resembles a mallet or small hammer. These tend to be wider and larger than blade putters and are often rounded at the toe, heel, and back. You will find all shape and sizes of the blade putter. Many mallet putters have alignment lines on the putter to assist with aiming your putt. Many think that the big and wide mallet putters are more forgiving on off center hits.

Club Head Material

Most golf putters today are made of stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, zinc or aluminum. You will find many putters made of material that sounds very impressive with names we have never heard of before. The main differences with the material are the feel and the weight. Softer materials are known to give you more feel of the ball when struck with the putter. The softer materials are brass, zinc and aluminum. The softer materials are normally the heavier of the materials. Putters made of steel are normally lighter in weight, but aluminum is a material that is known to be soft and light. Many of the newer materials are also designed to give more feel and also be lighter. Personally for me I like a lighter weighted putter. I have more confidence on putts 15 foot and shorter with the lighter weight, and I feel these are my putts that are going to make me a better player. The long ones you should be trying to get as close as possible and of course if it falls in then Great.
Milling
Putter faces may be milled which creates a flat and consistent putter face. A new type of milling in putters is called (CNC) Computer Numerically Controlled. This type of process created the entire putter head from a single block of material. This is very precise and adds to the cost of the putter.
Inserts
The insert has become more and more popular among putters being built today. The insert is normally made of a synthetic material, rubber, or some are a softer metal such as aluminum. The purpose of an insert is to create a softer feel when the ball is struck and to add to the perimeter weighting of the putter since the lighter insert is in the center of the face.

Putter Shaft

When referring to the shaft of your putter we are not really referring to the material the shaft is made of, not like with your drivers and irons. The putter shaft has a few other things to know and consider other than the material the shaft is made of. Points to consider when looking at putters are the length of the shaft, the grip on the shaft and the point where the shaft enters the putter head.
Length
There are many different lengths of putter shafts. Since there are so many different putting stances and positions then many different lengths of putter shafts are required to choose from. The easiest way to determine the length that is right for you will be to take your normal putting stance with your hands in your normal position. Normally you hold the putter in the middle or slightly lower than middle on the grip of the club. By taking your normal putting position and stance you should be able to determine if the shaft is the right length for you. There are some very long shafts for putters also. The long putters are for a very upright putting stance. Long putters are great for players with bad backs.
Grip
Most putter grips will be bigger in thickness than all of your other clubs. Of course this is another very personal preference but a thick putter grip should feel better and also help you keep your wrists from bending or breaking most commonly called while you putt. Another point to consider on your putter grip is the material your grip is made of. You don’t really need to worry about what the grip is made of but recognize that grips do feel different and you should be looking for a grip that not only feel nice to you but also allows you to gently hold the putter and not grip the club hard.
Hosel
The hosel is the point where the shaft enters the club face of your putter. There are 2 main points of entry of the hosel into the putter. You will find putters where the hosel enters the putter face in the middle or in the heel of the putter face. If you have a straight back and forward putting stroke then you will benefit from shaft entering the club face in the center. You will also find an offset hosel. These types have a bend in the hosel or shaft to allow for the shaft to be ahead of the club head. The purpose of the offset hosel is to produce a much smoother rolling ball.

Titleist Golf : Putters
In 1991, after working with the Ray Cook Golf Company, Scotty worked with Maxfli, Cleveland Classics, Founder's Golf and Mizuno. In 1992 he and his wife Kathy started Cameron Golf International. After several meetings, it was clear they shared the same vision and a relationship was formed. In November of 1994, Cameron Golf International and Acushnet Company became partners.
