Golf Wedges The Golf Wedges in your bag will become, if not already, your most used irons you have. If you carry a standard set of wedges, the pitching wedge, the sand wedges and the lob wedge, then these clubs will be used on almost all shots 125 yards from the green and in, of course this all depends on your game. There is another wedge which has become more and more popular and that is the Gap wedge. This wedge gets its name because it fills a gap between the Pitching wedge and the Sand wedge.

Most players should be aiming for the middle of the green when using a 9 Iron and lower. This is smart golf rather than always going for the pin and putting yourself in trouble more times than not. But with your wedges, you are closer to the green and your wedges having the shortest length of shafts which means maximum accuracy. Your wedges also produce the most spin allowing you to stop the ball much quicker. This all translates into you should be using your wedges to attack the pin. What this means is that your golf wedges are so much more important than most people seem to understand. Let’s look closer at each of the wedges and see if we can help you understand the purpose and importance of the golf wedges and hopefully you can turn this into helping you lower your golf handicap.

Pitching Wedge

The loft of the pitching wedge can be anywhere from 45 to 49 degrees. The standard pitching wedge loft is 48 degrees. The Pitching wedge will normally come with a standard set of irons. The pitching wedge is commonly used for shots that range anywhere from 135 to 100, depending upon your swing. The pitching wedge is excellent for chipping around the green when height and stopping the ball quickly is not a factor. The pitching wedge is much easier to use to chip and run around the green than some of the lower irons. The design of the club moves through the grass much easier, which is critical when touch means everything around the green. The pitching wedge can also be used for trouble shots, when distance is not the prime factor, but getting out of trouble and still getting some positive yards out of the shot. Don’t forget your pitching wedge when you find yourself in the sand. The pitching wedge is a nice selection if you find yourself constantly getting to low into the sand and having trouble getting the ball out of the sand. The pitching wedge is such a versatile golf club. The pitching wedge can and should be used in so many different positions you find yourself in around the golf course. Most players will have a favorite club and the pitching wedge could very easily be your favorite club.

Gap Wedge

The loft of the Gap wedge can be anywhere from 49 to 54 degrees. The standard Gap wedge loft is 52 degrees. The Gap wedge will not normally come with a standard set of irons. The Gap wedge is normally used for shots that range anywhere from 120 to 90 yards, depending upon your swing. The Gap wedge was developed to fill a hole or gap that used to exist between the Pitching wedge and the Sand wedge. The Gap wedge can also be called the Approach or Dual wedge, depending upon the manufacture. The Gap wedge can be used in similar situations as the Pitching wedge. Both clubs are very similar with enough lofts but not too much to allow it to be used in many different types of situations. The more you get used to using your wedges to attack the pin, the more value you will find in a Gap wedge.

Sand Wedge

The loft of the Sand wedge can be anywhere from 54 to 57 degrees. The standard Sand wedge is 56 degrees. The Sand wedge is normally used for shots that range from 105 to 70 yards, depending upon your swing. The Sand wedge obviously gets its name from being originally designed for use in sand around the green, but don’t let the name fool you, the Sand wedge has many more uses. The sand wedge is excellent for many uses around the green. Use the sand wedge when you need a little extra height on your chips and shorter stopping distance than the Pitching or Gap wedges. Always remember that the more loft on your chips requires more feel and touch, so don’t use your sand wedge unless you need a little extra height on your chips.

Lob Wedge

The loft of the Lob wedge can be anywhere from 57 to 64 degrees. The standard Lob wedge is 60 degrees. The Lob wedge is normally used for shots that range from 70 to 50 yards, depending upon your swing. The Lob wedge is most likely the hardest of the wedges to use. The primary use of the Lob wedge is for those delicate shots around the green when you have very little green to work with, but the Lob wedge can also be turned into such a valuable weapon in your bag. The Lob wedge should be used only when the conditions require it. An example would be around the green and some type of trouble, such as a sand trap directly in between you and the hole. You need to get the ball over the sand trap but also not much green between the sand trap and the hole. Use the Lob wedge at the right time and it can be valuable, use it when you don’t need to and you are most likely hurting your game.

When you buy a standard set of irons, they normally will be from a 3 iron or 4 iron to a pitching wedge, meaning you are not receiving all the wedges you really need. You now have 2 choices, do you buy the wedges that match your set or do you buy wedges made by another manufacturer. We have a list of the most notable golf wedges manufacturers in the game. We describe the golf wedges they build with a link to see them for yourself. Be smart and be prepared to play the best game you can. You simply must have all the wedges in order to be prepared to attack the pin and lower your scores. Lower score means a lower handicap.
