Clay County was formed in 1824 out of portions of Wayne, Crawford and Fayette Counties. Its name is in honor of Henry Clay, famous American statesman, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky and United States Secretary of State in the 19th century. Its county seat is Louisville, Illinois. As with many counties in Southeastern Illinois, Clay County offers many opportunities to discover its charm and warmth. In Louisville, the retired county jail has the distinction of hosting the Clay County museum with the building listed on the National Registry of Historic places.
