Illinois Golf Courses : Hancock County
Name in honor of John Hancock was the first governor of Commonwealth of Massachussetts. He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1775-80 and 1785-86, serving as President of the Congress from 1775-77. Hancock is most famous as the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. Hancock made his signature large, (So the King of England could read it without his spectacles) or so the legends say. Located in western Illinois, just a few miles east of the Mississippi, is Hancock County. This charming community has a rich historical story that interweaves with the Mormon Church. Other historical sites associated with Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Joseph Smith and local Indian tribes make the area a great place to visit. Hancock County has a bright future that includes a safe and quiet place to live and work with a growing economy that revolves around agriculture and manufacturing. This short course features small and undulating greens, plus sand bunkers coming into play around every green. Water hazards (three ponds) come into play on four holes. The terrain is hilly on the opening holes then levels off by the time you come to the finishing holes. Shot accuracy is essential because out-of-bounds areas come into play on every hole.

This course has three ponds coming into play on a number of holes, and several mature trees which can affect your shots. The course was built on rolling terrain and has undulating greens that are difficult to read.

This club is located in the City of Nauvoo, which is an historic tourist site in mid-America that gives tourists insight on how life was lived in the 1800's. The short course has tight fairways and small greens that are fast. The elevation changes by as much as 160 feet on the course. The signature hole is 16, a 372-yard, par 4, requiring an approach shot to an island green. The back nine was added in 1993 by Steve Sanders. The club also has an eighteen hole miniature golf course, so children can play while you do.
