Illinois Golf Courses : Jackson County
Jackson County incorporated as a county within the Illinois Territory on January 10, 1816 and the State of Illinois later joined the Union of States on December 3, 1818. The first train into Carbondale on the main line north from Cairo arrived on Independence Day, 1854. Once extended northward, the railroad from Chicago to New Orleans developed stops about every ten miles as it passed through the county. Important stops included Makanda (formerly named North Pass), Carbondale and DeSoto. The innovation of refrigerated rail cars eventually enabled the expansion of orchards in the southern half of the county that allowed fruit to be shipped in one day to Chicago. The establishment of Carbondale College that eventually became Southern Illinois University spurred much of the cultural development of the county. It has remained the county's largest employer ever since. Let’s see the Illinois Golf Courses in Jackson County.
