Massac County was organized in 1843, out of Johnson and Pope Counties. The County was named for Fort Massac, which was built by the French in 1757, during the French and Indian War. The Fort was itself named in 1759, in honor of Claud Louis d'Espinchal, Marquis de Massiac, the French Naval Minister. Massiac is a place in France. Down by the (river side), on the Ohio River, is Massac County, Illinois. Being so it is rich in history. At the same time it has many of the outdoor activities today as recreation, that our forefathers had as livelihood. There is great fishing, scenic rolling hills for hiking, camping and horseback riding. Ducks, geese, turkey, quail and deer are available for those who enjoy hunting.
