Monroe County, located in Greater Southwestern Illinois, has a population of approximately 25,000 people and has experienced dramatic growth in recent years. The county combines many benefits of an urban setting with the character, high quality of living and atmosphere of a rural location. The county is part of the Southwestern Illinois German Heritage Area a French Heritage Corridor and is a popular day-trip destination. The county seat is Waterloo, where an historic courthouse, with new addition sits as the centerpiece of the Courthouse Square. The restored Bellefontaine Home is the headquarters for the Monroe County Historical Society in Waterloo. The county's population is almost evenly distributed between the incorporated and unincorporated areas. Monroe County has a number of historical sites and structures. The French were the first to explore in the area about 1673, with the first permanent settlements established about 20 years later. The English, Irish and Germans later came to the region. The local economy of Monroe County, with its fertile soils and temperate climate, has historically centered on agriculture and agribusiness, with corn, soybeans and wheat being the principal products. Fruits, vegetables and nursery stock are grown locally and sold at local stores and roadside stands during their harvest seasons. Over the years, a diverse group of producer and services industries have operated locally. County residents also commute to employment throughout the region. The front nine on this course was designed in today's traditional manner, while the back nine was designed similar to the well known European courses. A portable mill was brought to the site to rough-cut all of the red and white oak trees that were removed during construction.

This is a very unique links-style course. The back nine provides a panoramic view of the waterfalls on the other holes. The course was built on rolling terrain. Golf Digest rated this course as the 7th (Best Public Course) in the state for 1996. Club personnel always work to maintain a reasonable pace of play.

This course can be quite strenuous to walk because the terrain is extremely hilly. Even though the fairways are tree lined, they still afford generous landing areas. Water hazards (one lake and a creek) come into play on a number of holes. Senior discounts are only available during the week. The fairways are tree lined and the greens are undulating.

This course features water hazards coming into play on twelve holes. Even through the fairways are lined with mature trees, they still afford generous landing areas. In addition, the fast greens are undulating and average-sized. The signature hole is 14, a 160-yard, par 3, featuring a waterfront wall in front of the "green" tee, and requiring a tee shot over water to the green.

This eighteen hole course is situated on the plains of Columbia. The course is relatively flat, making it an easy course to walk. The layout is excellent for seniors and also for individuals learning the game of golf. There are several lakes that come into play, and five holes require forced carries over the water.

Illinois Golf Courses Comments:
Hole 3 has a sand bunker positioned along the entire right side of its green. Hole 9, a par 3, requires a tee shot to a peninsula green. The course was built on primarily flat terrain, but there are a couple hills that can cause uneven lies. The greens are undulating and fairly large. Water hazards (ponds) come into play on six holes. The ladies tee off from the same set of tees as the men.
