Indiana Golf Courses Huntington County Native Americans enjoyed the region’s wealth of natural resources, abundant game, navigable waterways, and flint for tools, for thousands of years. By the early 1700s, Miami Indians controlled the Long Portage, one of three principal routes between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi watershed. The Wabash and Erie Canal linked Huntington and Fort Wayne in 1835, opening Indiana and the entire Midwest to settlement. European immigrants came with the canal boats. Among them were Joseph and Margaret Nuck, whose cabin today stands near Chief Richardville’s at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park. County residents keep the spirit of the pioneers alive through a variety of annual festivals and historic re-enactments. There’s never a dull moment in Huntington County. The area’s natural beauty offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. Organized sports leagues provide athletic competition for individuals of all ages. Diverse community festivals and celebrations fill every season. Two large reservoirs are situated on the county’s south side. Salamonie Reservoir and J. Edward Roush Lake are state recreation areas offering family camping and miles of trails for hiking and biking in summer and cross country skiing and snowmobiling in winter. Both reservoirs provide swimming beaches, fishing, boating, water skiing, and other water sports. Salamonie Reservoir features bridle trails and an equestrian campground. A well-staffed nature center is open year-round. Roush Lake amenities include a shooting range and a flight site for radio controlled model airplanes and gliders. The front nine is much more hilly than the back nine, so you should expect some uneven lies early in the round.
