Scott County, Indiana was named after General Charles Scott. He served in the French and Indian War, and was present at Braddock's defeat in 1755. He served in Lord Dunmere's War in 1755. In 1762 he married Frances Howard Sweeney. When the American Revolution began in 1776 he was made a Colonel and the next year a Brigadier General. He also served with Washington at Valley Forge. In 1781 and 1782 he made exploratory trips to Kentucky. In 1784, he was granted 216 acres of land on the Kentucky River for his services in the French and Indian War. His log home built on that site still stands today. In 1808 he was elected 4th Governor of Kentucky and lived in the Governor's Mansion until 1812.
