MacGregor Golf Company began as a venture among the Crawford brothers, John McGregor and Edward Canby, who owned Crawford, McGregor and Canby (CMC), a manufacturer of shoe lasts.

It was during a trip to Europe on behalf of the shoe last company that Canby, who later bought the company from MacGregor and the Crawford brothers, was introduced to golf. As an entrepreneur, he was convinced that golf would be a major sport in America. Armed with woodworking expertise from the shoe last business, CMC began manufacturing persimmon heads and hickory shafts.

Since his products were shipped to Great Britain, Canby applied for the trademark J. MacGregor. For many years, this was the name used on CMC clubs until the J. was eventually dropped in the 1930s and the name was officially changed to the MacGregor Golf Co.

The company's expertise in woodworking quickly made it one of the largest manufacturers of persimmon heads and hickory shafts in the world. This leadership position paved way for a creative R&D team that gave the golf industry many 'firsts' such as face inserts, aesthetic designs for sole plates, shaft shock absorbers, four-way roll soles and rubber grips. Breakthroughs like these earned MacGregor a reputation of being one of the greatest innovators in golf equipment history.

The late 1920s saw the inception of two important new concepts: the growing popularity of steel shafts and the advancement of matched sets of clubs. MacGregor was at the forefront of both movements. They had already been selling sets of clubs with the tubular Bristol steel shaft for four or five years before the breakthrough came in 1927 with their first "Harmonized" club sets, available with both steel and wood shafts.

MacGregor's true catalyst of innovation was Toney Penna. Arguably, one of the most creative individuals in the history of golf club design, Penna joined MacGregor in the 1930s and with an R&D team and the original Pro Advisory Staff that included Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Jimmy Demaret, he set the tone for MacGregor's innovative craftsmanship.

Throughout the years, several MacGregor clubmakers matched Penna's achievements with game enhancing innovations of their own. In fact, MacGregor's craftsmanship is legendary, with five of the 19 total inductees in the Club Makers Hall of Fame.

It was through the vision of MacGregor's heralded craftsmen that innovations like the "Neutralizer" (a wooden dowel of spring hickory inserted in the shaft where it joins the clubhead) came to life. As the popularity of steel shafts grew, MacGregor was the first to solve the problem of "stings" golfers experienced during miss-hits.

Another first for MacGregor was the mild steelhead. With the growth of the golf industry, many club manufacturers recognized the difficulties with grinding expensive steel for iron heads. As a result, MacGregor developed the first mild steelheads, which is still an important component of iron construction today.

MacGregor was also the first to create a rubber and cord grip: the first departure from the conventional leather grip. Soon after its invention, MacGregor's "All-Weather" rubber and cord grip was being used by almost every top tournament player. Later, MacGregor developed a very soft, rubber grip called the Tri-Tac. The grip revolutionized the industry-causing the demand for leather grips to drop to less than 10 percent of the market.

During the 1940s, more than 50 percent of the field at any PGA event played MacGregor clubs. MacGregor dominated the Tour with players such as Craig Wood, Lew Worsham, Jim Turnesa, Claude Harmon, Chick Harbert. Bob Toski, Doug Ford, Jack Burke Jr., Ted Kroll, Dick Mayer, Bob Rosburg, Mike Souchak, and Al Mengert joining the original three Advisory Staff members. Between 1941 to 1948 these players captured seven PGA Tour money-winning titles and between 1937 to 1959 they compiled a record six U.S. Opens, eight Masters, eleven PGA Championships and one British Open.

Another impactful MacGregor innovation was the "four-way roll," which greatly improved the performance of wood clubs. MacGregor's master craftsmen softened the lines on the wood by slightly rolling all the edges and crowning the top of the head. This created a slight apex at the center of the hitting surface that would compensate for hitting a ball off-center.

One of MacGregor's most significant contributions to golf occurred in 1949. MacGregor was the first company to introduce a matching set of woods and irons, a move that revolutionized the merchandising of top-grade pro clubs. The idea was so well received that the company created a special display box for the new MT line that housed 13 clubs (4 woods and 9 irons) as one unit. It was also the first time that a pitching or a sand wedge, was included as a part of a matched set of irons.

The Eye-O-Matic woods, are perhaps one of MacGregor's most remembered innovations. The woods had a two-tone fiber insert, red with a white or horizontal strip running through the center to better frame the sweetspot. Following this innovation was the Pro Pel shaft. The shaft was drawn from a new steel alloy and sported a different step pattern that altered the weight of the shaft and improved shot-making and shot consistency. Most recently, MacGregor brought to market the first American-made cast titanium metal wood in 1990 and is ushering in the new millennium with patented V-FOIL technologies driving new product introductions.

Over the past century, MacGregor has a lot to be proud of. On the PGA Tour, the company has experienced decades of dominance, with a record 59 Majors; and more inductees in the Club Makers Hall of Fame than any other company in the history of the game.

Today, MacGregor is singularly focused on designing and manufacturing innovative easy-to-hit golf equipment that enhances golf performance for avid golfers of all skill levels.
