Michigan Golf Courses : Allegan County
Allegan County is located in the south west part of Lower Michigan. It is approximately 827 square miles with 25 miles of coast line along Lake Michigan. It is the 18th largest county in Michigan and has 24 townships. The County is still mostly rural in nature, and still maintains an agriculture and tourist based economy with many nice Michigan golf courses, however trends are toward more light industry and technology which has translated into Allegan County being in one of the fastest growing regions of the state. Allegan County's name was coined by the noted student of the Indians, Henry Schoolcraft. The County was set off in 1831 and organized in 1835. Settlement of the County seat, Allegan, was promoted in 1835 by eastern capitalists who were attracted by the site's sources of water power. For many years, steamboats traveled the Kalamazoo River between Allegan and Saugatuck. Extensive lumbering by the pioneers cleared the way for farm production, in which the County has been a leader. Now it’s time to see the Michigan golf courses in Allegan County, Michigan.

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
Fairways are nestled between abrupt sandy ridges and oak and pine forests. The front nine is the more open of the two nines, but those employing the grip-it-and-rip-it method may soon find themselves in trouble. Virtually every green on the front is protected by bunkers. On the back, the first four holes are very enjoyable to play, offering a myriad of playable yet strategic riddles. The finishing five holes, which are all routed along a deep and scenic ravine may well compete with some of the finest finishing holes in the state.

This course offers a variety of playing conditions. The terrain is somewhat rolling, and the tree-lined fairways offer generous landing areas. Water only comes into play on hole 4, a 102-yard, par 3, but there are a couple of ditches that play as hazards. The small greens are difficult to hit and slightly sloped. The ladies tee off from the same set of tees as the men on five of the nine holes. A practice fairway is available, but you must shag your own balls.

Whether it's Number Nine's cathedral of soaring pines, or Seventeen's intimate theatre of green (complete with a precipitous ravine for an orchestra pit), each hole at Ravines is, indeed, a unique stage all its own, inviting, even inspiring, your performance within its natural confines.
