Although Frenchmen were the first recorded white men in the Cheboygan area in the late 1600's, the area was originally inhabited by the Chippewa Indians. Settlers did not arrive until 1844, and even then the county's growth was slow until the first sawmill was built in the 1870's. With the sawmill came a lumbering boom that tripled the population within ten years. Cheboygan County boasts an extensive system of connecting inland lakes and rivers, which allows boaters to navigate through Mullett and Burt Lakes, and access several towns such as Indian River and Topinabee. Native Americans used this inland water route for centuries, from which the county acquired its name, which literally means: (Water of the Chippewa). Today it is used exclusively for recreation. Cheboygan County's main industries are tourism which include Michigan golf courses, farming, commercial fishing, paper, wood, and metal fabrication and limestone. This course's front nine fairways are narrow and its back nine fairways are more thickly tree lined. There is a stream running through the course, which comes into play on a couple of holes. The greens are extremely fast.

This regulation eighteen hole course is situated in the very picturesque forest area of Mackinaw. There are several mature trees lining the fairways, and water hazards come into play on a few holes. Wildlife is often seen roaming in and around the this and many Michigan golf courses.

Located on site are an 18-hole regulation course and an 18-hole par 3 course. The Ridge Course is a challenging 18-hole track, and actually plays through a Huckleberry swamp. The par 3 Executive Course is good for beginners and is easy to walk.
