Michigan Golf Courses : Emmet County
Emmet County is at the top of the Michigan mitten. Its northern tip bumps into the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Michigan outlines its western boundary. At first, Ottawa Indians, living in stone-age splendor, occupied the lake shore rim. Beyond the water's edge there was only the forest, the lakes, the streams, and some swamps dismal enough to discourage a traveling bear. Its strategic location on the great lakes waterways, however, marked it for early discovery by white men and the point of control for the whole upper great lakes territory. By the time Michigan became a state, well over one hundred years of fur trading, war whooping, empire building history was already behind it. Emmet County is located in the Northern Lower Peninsula and is traversed by US-31 and US131 with Lake Michigan to the west. The county also encompasses the Waugoshance island group, while the county seat, Petoskey, is at the heart of a large natural harbor. Other incorporated communities within the county include, Alanson, Harbor Springs, and Pellston. There are many fine Michigan golf courses in the area. This county is experiencing some of the most rapid growth in the state, with a major resort development underway and a thriving industrial base continuing to grow. Let’s look at the Michigan golf courses in Emmet County, Michigan.

This facility opened nine new holes in 1998, giving it three nine holes courses that can be played in the three eighteen hole combinations. The courses are located in the outback of northern Michigan and are very straightforward. The fairways on all three combinations are tree lined, while the greens are fast and undulating. Water hazards come into play on several holes on each of the layouts. Overall, the scenery and serenity on this course is its major selling point. Perhaps one of the most spectacular holes is located on the Woods Course.

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This resort, features 72 holes. The most recent addition, the Arthur Hills Course, features enormous sand traps and intimidating water holes. Trees run along both sides of the fairways, and many of the greens have heavy undulation. The Donald Ross Memorial Course was designed so that each hole would replicate another hole from different courses designed by Donald Ross. The only hole that is not a Ross design is the 10th, which is a copy of the par-four 14th, at Royal Dornoch in Scotland. The Heather Course has tree-lined fairways that are wide open. Playing this course is not unlike being out in the country. The course features the Yardmark system, which is a display panel in the golf cart telling the player how far to the front of the green, distance to carry a hazard, and how far he/she has hit the tee shot. This is one of the many resort Michigan golf courses in the state.

This regulation course, located in a rustic setting, is surrounded by log homes. The fairways are tree lined on the front nine, and the somewhat open back nine was built on rolling terrain. The average-sized greens vary in undulation. Water hazards (ponds) come into play on two holes. Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This course, located on the high bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan, blends in well with the natural terrain. The fairways afford wide landing areas, but the rough is similar to that found on a Scottish links-style course, which is not normal for Michigan golf courses. The greens are large, undulating, and not too severely bunkered. Four tees are available, enabling people to choose between a longer, more challenging game, or a shorter more relaxing one.

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This eighteen hole course roams through majestic stands of plantation pines. There are areas that resemble a links-style course and others that are plentiful in hardwoods. The course is very scenic and features an abundance of large, natural waste bunkers. The fairways are generous and considered player-friendly if one's ball strays from its intended target.

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This course was built on predominantly flat terrain. The greens are small, and the tree-lined fairways are defined by heavy rough. In addition, many of the fairways are doglegs, so being able to work the ball from right to left and visa versa will really enhance your ability to shoot a low round.
