Michigan Golf Courses : Gogebic County
Gogebic County is located at the far end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, bordering Wisconsin. The county was named after the Chippewa word (agogebic), which means (a body of water hanging on high). This is an apt name for this area, which includes part of the southern Lake Superior coastline, 315 named lakes, (including the largest lake in the Upper Peninsula, Lake Gogebic), many inland rivers with 32 waterfalls. Civilization came to the area around 1871 when iron was discovered near the Montreal River. The 1880's turned the area into a cauldron of mining activity: The Gogebic range was the last U. P. iron range to be opened and at the peak of the mining era in 1920 produced 7 million tons annually. Mining activity ended in 1966 when the Peterson mine closed. Today tourism, including water recreation, Michigan golf courses, and winter sports like skiing and snowmobiling, remain the county’s top attraction. This is a fairly short course, but the terrain is hilly, so you can expect many uneven lies. The tree-lined fairways are bordered by a standard cut of rough. Water hazards come into play on three holes. The average-sized greens are slightly sloped and have medium speed.

This hilly par 3 course has only one water hazard, but several well-placed sand bunkers do come into play. The greens are small and the fairways are wide open. The longest and toughest hole is 5, which measures 170 yards. There is no pro shop, but some tees and balls are available.

This nine hole course offers very consistent greens that putt true. They are undulating and fast. This course takes great pride in the year-round maintenance of its greens. The fairways are lined with young trees and are generally forgiving, only penalizing those with extreme hooks or slices.
