Michigan Golf Courses Grand Traverse County Grand Traverse County is truly one of Michigan’s wonders on the Great Lakes. Located in the northwestern section of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, this county features East and West Bays, separated by the Old Mission Peninsula. The area was named by French explorers in the late 1830s, who perceived the walk across the Old Mission Peninsula as La Grande Traverse, or a long distance. A Presbyterian mission was built there in 1839, which the peninsula was eventually named after. The area is primarily known for tourism, not only for its beautiful Lake Michigan coastline, but also inland areas, featuring the Boardman River, ( known for its excellent steelhead fishing), several large lakes and forests and many nice Michigan golf courses. It is also known as the world leader in cherry production, celebrating the Cherry Festival annually at the end of June at Traverse City. The County also has a diverse economic base, including plastics manufacturing, woodworking, food processing, and medical technology, just to name a few. Whether you visit for a day or a week, Traverse City is the kind of place you can come back to again and again, and always find something interesting to do. Let’s see the Michigan golf courses in Grand Traverse County, Michigan.

The Wolverine Course is the newest design and features two distinct nines. The front is more open and flat, while the back nine is more similar to the Bear Course in design. The Bear Course is the most difficult of the three courses because it features narrow, tree-lined fairways that are terraced. The greens are undulating, but putt true. The Spruce Run Course has 1,100 spruce trees that can affect your shots. The fairways are open on the front nine and tight on the back nine. This is one of the many Resort Michigan golf courses.

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This course was Tom Doak's first solo design and is still the truest to his art. Doak is known for his minimalist, lay-of-the-land philosophy, and no course better represents it than this one. The front nine features a Scottish links-style design which is not normal for Michigan golf courses, with wide-open fairways and rolling greens. The back nine has very narrow fairways lined with beautiful pine trees. The terrain is hilly and the tee boxes are elevated.

The course is constructed on high rolling grass land, accented with mature hardwoods and pine forests. The front 9 is designed in a tree-lined parkland style, while the back 9 is more open and (linksy). The greens are medium sized, averaging 8,000 square feet, are well undulated, and play fast. Very little earth was moved during construction, and the course follows the natural lay of the land.

Mitchell Creek Golf Course

Holes: 9

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This nine hole course, built on flat terrain, features a thick cut of rough lining its fairways, plus trees of various sizes that can affect your shots. The small greens are slightly undulating, but roll true. The course plays longer than the yardage indicates, plus it can be difficult at times because of a winding creek jutting across and alongside many of the narrow fairways.

The resort, has three regulation eighteen hole courses. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the Bear Course winds its way through the rolling Michigan hills. Almost two miles out at the turn, this expansive course features large, elevated fairways and multiple-tiered greens. Accuracy off the tee is essential, as this hole plays over a pond to a cloverleaf green and is protected by four sand bunkers. With an abundance of native pine, spruce, oak, and birch, both the Wolverine and Spruce Run courses boast scenic views of the Easy Bay of Lake Michigan.
