Michigan Golf Courses Iosco County Iosco is Indian for (Water of Light). This certainly describes what it’s all about. From the Lake Huron coastline to the Au Sable River Valley, these pristine waters continue to enchant. Originally inhabited by Chippewa Indians, this area provided ample shelter of timber from towering white pine forests and food from rivers and lakes: Tawas City, East Tawas and Tawas Bay, (the largest harbor on the Great Lakes), were named after Chief O-Ta-Was, known for fishing the waters of Lake Huron. French settlers were the first white men in the area in the 1830’s, setting up trading posts along the banks of the Au Sable (all sand) River. The great lumber boom of the 1880’s brought civilization to the area. Today, over a third of the county is contained in the Huron National Forest, with Lumberman’s Monument standing as a tribute to that era. In the mid 1900’s, a series of dams were developed on the Au Sable, first for power, later for recreation, creating winding ponds and inlets that invite sightseers and fishermen, but especially canoers. You can find a few nice Michigan golf courses in the county. Just a few miles from Lumberman’s Monument stands the Canoe Memorial, honoring those who traversed the Au Sable, as today’s canoers do still in the annual Au Sable River Run, from Grayling to Oscoda. Iosco County is indeed a must-see on Michigan’s tourist itinerary. Come and experience it for yourself. Let’s see the Michigan golf courses in Iosco County, Michigan.

Rating: 75.0
Slope: 138
Status: Resort
Season: April 1 thru October 31

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This resort has three outstanding eighteen hole courses and an eighteen hole par 3 course. The Gailes Course is a links-style design that features sod-faced bunkers and tall heather rough lining all its fairways. There are two double greens like those at Saint Andrews in Scotland. The Resort Course is very beautiful because of all the flowers and trees. A wide variety of wildlife populates this course. There are water hazards coming into play on both regulation courses. New in 2001 is the Blackshire Course. Designed to emulate the style, look, and feel of Pine Valley C.C. in New Jersey. Architect Kevin Aldridge has given this course a rugged and natural feel. The Blackshire's 18 holes are cut through hardwoods and pines, and there are large sand waste areas along the fairways, trees and greens. This is one of the many resort Michigan golf courses in the state.

Red Hawk Golf Club

Slope: 139
Status: Public
Season: April 1 thru November 1

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This course is situated in a valley and was cut out of the surrounding wooded terrain. The rolling landscape opens up to tight landing areas that play surprisingly wide open. The undulated greens offer deceptively subtle breaks.

Michigan Golf Courses Comments:
This course was built in a scenic country setting like so many Michigan golf courses with numerous panoramic views. The course has rolling terrain and undulating greens to test your putting skills. The fairways are fairly open with some strategically placed trees, which can alter your shots. Natural streams flow throughout the course and create ponds and hazards.

The fairways are fairly wide and are open. The greens are very sloped and quite slow. The old front nine has hilly, tree-lined fairways. Some of the greens and tees are elevated. There are two ponds that come into play on three holes. The greens are undulating and well bunkered.
