Lapeer derives it's name from the French and Indian traders who traveled the Flint River. The river's rocky bed suggested (The Stone) or in French (LePierre), the English translation being (Lapeer). Lapeer County was once part of the Northwest Territory. By an ordinance of the Congress of the United States, passed July 13, 1787, the whole of the territory of the United States, lying northwest of the Ohio River, though still occupied by the British, was organized as the Northwest Territory. Today, Lapeer County is a well-balanced community of farms, small industry, Michigan golf courses, and urban residents, serving the heavy industry of Genesse and Oakland counties. This facility has three nine hole courses that are played in three eighteen hole combinations. The Red Course has water hazards (creeks and ponds) coming into play on at least seven separate occasions. The majority of the sand bunkers guard the greens, but there are some sand bunkers located in the fairways. The fairways were built on rolling terrain and have a scattering of trees that can alter your shots. The White Course is mostly flat, but there are some hills that can cause uneven lies. The greens are large and well bunkered. The Gold Course's first four holes are heavily wooded, while its last five holes are mostly open.
