Michigan Golf Courses Oakland County Oakland County began as a settlement where the Saginaw Trail crossed the Clinton River in 1818. One year later on January 12, 1819, Oakland County was officially organized and was named for its beautiful oak trees. Oakland County was not heavily wooded enough to attract many lumbermen, and settlement was slow at first. Oakland County's agriculture was productive, however, and when roads and railroads to the north were built, the county was able to trade with the lumber areas. Today the excellent agriculture of Oakland County has been overshadowed by its industrial and residential growth. The result is a mixture of big city, suburban, and rural lifestyles. A superior system of parks includes 6 state recreation areas, 3 state parks, and 2 metro-parks providing Michigan's second largest population with an abundance of leisure opportunity. Let’s see the many Michigan golf courses in Oakland County, Michigan.

This course demands shot accuracy because the fairways are narrow. The undulating and fast greens are very firm, so getting your approach shots to hold will require some skill. This might be a good course for the (bump and run) technique. Yet, water hazards come into play on fourteen holes, and if you're not careful, you may "bump and run" your way directly into one.

The North Course mirrors a Scottish links-style design, and the greens are loaded with subtle breaks. The tree-lined fairways were built on gently rolling terrain. Water hazards come into play on four holes. The 1924, 1937, 1961, 1985 and 1996 U.S. Opens were held on the South Course. Robert Trent Jones redesigned the South Course before the 1952 U.S. Open and again in 1972 and 1984. He also redesigned the North Course in 1969. Arthur Hills did a redesign on the South Course in 1987. The 2004 Ryder Cup Matches were held at Oakland Hills.
