New York Golf Courses Albany County Albany County was incorporated in 1683. Situated on the west bank of the Hudson River, Albany County is approximately 135 miles directly north of New York City and has an area of approximately 540 square miles. A number of the State's institutions of higher learning are located in the County, among them the State University of New York at Albany, the Sage College of Albany (a division of The Sage Colleges), Albany Law School (Union University), Siena College, The College of St. Rose, Albany Medical College, Albany College of Pharmacy and three business colleges. The County's transportation needs are served by a network of excellent highways, including the New York State Thruway, Interstate Highways 90 and 87 and a connecting link to the Massachusetts Turnpike; major bus lines; three railroads; Albany International Airport; the Hudson River; the New York State Barge Canal and the Port of Albany. The County contains three cities-Albany, Cohoes and Watervliet-and ten towns. The cities have well equipped fire and police departments and the towns are served by many individual fire districts, volunteer fire companies and town police departments. There are many nice New York golf courses in the county. Educational services for County residents are provided by private schools, school districts and Hudson Valley Community College, which is located in a neighboring county. This hilly course offers great views of the Hudson Valley. The Empire State Plaza can also be seen from off one of the elevated tees. All the greens are undulating and elevated, some of the them are multi-tiered and "potato chip" shaped. In addition, water hazards come into play on four holes. There is plenty of wildlife including turkey, deer, and fox that can be seen on the course.

Formerly known as The New Course at Albany, this difficult course is hilly and extremely well maintained. The fast greens are well bunkered and large, and the fairways are tree lined. The course was redesigned in 1993 to bring back the original Albany Municipal Golf Course design, which this course opened as in 1929.

This flat course is easy to walk. The narrow fairways are tree lined, and the average-sized greens are slightly sloped. A pond comes into play on hole 9, a 122-yard, par 3. The signature hole is 3, a 195-yard, par 4, featuring fairway bunkers in the landing areas.

This public facility offers four nine hole courses that are played in four 18-hole combinations. The Red/White combination has the most water hazards, with six coming into play on nine holes. This combination can be lethal considering all the dogleg fairways and hazards.

This wooded course is fairly narrow and predominantly flat. The course does not have sand or grass bunkers, nor water hazards. However, because the fairways are so narrow, this course is no push over. Nine hole play is not allowed on the weekends until late in the afternoons.

Orchard Creek is an 18 hole, 6553 yard course located 35 minutes west of Albany. Designed by Paul Cowley and open since 1998, the course includes four sets of tees to challenge a variety of handicaps. The gold tees are rated and sloped for both men and women.

This old, links-style course was built on an island. The small greens are fast, and the fairways vary in width. When the course was originally founded over 100 years ago, it only had two holes. This club has three nine hole courses that are played in three eighteen hole combinations. The Red Course is flatter than the others and has a few more ponds in play.
