New York Golf Courses Bronx County Bronx County is one of the five counties (boroughs) that comrpise the City of New York. Bronx County or The Bronx, as it is commonly called) is the northernmost county in New York City is is across the Harlem River from Manhattan. It also lies across the East River from Queens. The Bronx is the home of such notables as Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter, Roger Clemens, Edgar Allen Poe and my great grandfather, William Howland Pettys. At one time, the Bronx was all farmland owned by a family named Bronks. The wealthy would travel to visit the Bronks family, and would simply say that they were going to the Bronks, and the name stuck. The Bronx is the home of New York's two greatest landmarks, the Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium. There are a few nice New York golf courses in the county. The area was named after the Dutch settler Jonas Bronck, who had claimed the area as his farm back in 1636. The Bronx is the only borough of New York that is physically connected to the mainland of the United States. The borough was largely undeveloped and consisted mostly of cottages, farmlands, and wild marshes until a large swell of Irish and Italian immigrants inhabited the area. Immigrants still come to the Bronx, but today they are Russian and Hispanic. Let’s see the New York golf courses in Bronx County.

Mosholu Golf Course and Driving Range

Address:
3700 Jerome Ave
Bronx, NY 10467

Phone: 718-655-9164
Holes: 9
Par: 71
Rating: 70.6
Slope: 120
Status: Public
Season: Open All Year

New York Golf Courses Comments:
This is a difficult course because the tree-lined fairways are narrow, and the medium-sized greens are fast. There are several blind fairways in the design, and the rolling terrain can produce some awkward lies. There's virtually no water on the course and very few sand bunkers. This course plays very long for a beginner and can be an intimidating place to learn the sport.

Pelham Split Rock Golf Club

Address:
870 Shore Road
Bronx, NY 10464

Phone: 718-885-1258
Holes: 36
Par: 71
Rating: 70.3
Slope: 117
Status: Public
Season: Open All Year

New York Golf Courses Comments:
This public golf club offers two excellent eighteen hole courses. Wild deer, turkey and pheasant occasionally visit the fairways on this course, located in the midst of Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. The Pelham Bay Course is a links-style design. The greens are undulating and medium in speed and size. No water comes into play, but there are several sand bunkers spread throughout the course. The Split Rock Course is quite difficult because it is very wooded and has tight fairways. A creek comes into play on four holes, and the terrain is rolling.

Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course

Address:
Van Cortlandt Park S and Bailey Ave
Bronx, NY 10471

Phone: 718-543-4595
Holes: 18
Par: 70
Rating: 68.3
Slope: 122
Status: Public
Season: Open All Year

New York Golf Courses Comments:
This well-maintained course is the oldest municipal course in the U.S. Built as a nine hole design in 1885, it was expanded to eighteen holes ten years later. Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Willie Nelson, Willie Mays, and The Three Stooges have taken turns hacking away on this legendary design. The layout is known for its long par 5's, particularly hole 2, which measures 620 yards. Despite this, it's a forgiving design with tree-lined fairways that are wide open, and large greens that are fast. Sand bunkers can be found on every hole. Several new highways have been cut through the course requiring some reconfiguration of the original design.
