New York Golf Courses : Essex County
Essex County is located in the heart of New York State's Adirondack Park, south of Montreal and north of New York City. Interstate 87, the major highway between Albany and Canada runs right through the county. Amtrak's Manhattan to Montreal, Adirondack Special also makes a number of stops within the county. Boasting 1,907 square miles of land, Essex is the largest county in the park. Its terrain varies, ranging from 95 feet above sea level at Lake Champlain to 5,344 feet at Mount Marcy, the highest point in New York State. Lakes, rivers, streams, along with hundreds of miles of wilderness cover the landscape. There are many New York golf courses in the area. The history of this region began with the coming of Champlain with his companions and Indian guides in 1609. Any lasting settlement was delayed by the wars between the English and the French, with the added difficulties brought about by the confliction of land grants made by the two governments. Champlain had been made ruler over the territory as a reward for its discovery, but with the passing of the French rule came a proclamation by the King of England, in 1763, empowering the colonial governors to issue grants within their domain. These covering the same lands already granted by the French, threw doubt on all the titles for land, and in the period of adjustment, many sold their properties for very cheap prices. William Gilliland taking advantage of these troubled times, bought several thousand acres in Essex and Clinton counties, and upon them established the first planned colony in 1765 called Willsborough. To the south near the outlet of Lake George, another New York merchant, Samuel Deall, was founding the town known as Ticonderoga. When the Revolution ended the settlers poured in. Let’s see the New York golf courses in Essex County.
