Oneida County has a full seasonal calendar, which offers a multitude of attractions, from outdoor festivals, art exhibitions, bocce ball tournaments, harness racing, boating and other recreational activities. The many New York golf courses have been called some of the best in central New York and don't miss the local award winning brewery. The Boilermaker, America's largest 15K road race featuring top runners from all parts of the world. Oneida County has always been at the center of transportation developments that controlled the growth of New York State and in large measure, the North Eastern United States. Nearly one hundred miles west of the state capital of Albany, Oneida County holds the upper reaches of the Mohawk River flowing eastward to the Hudson River. The County is also the site of streams flowing west to the Great Lakes, North to the St. Lawrence River, and South to the Susquehanna River. The height of land in this east-west watershed divide is the site of the City of Rome. A few miles to the east is the site where the Mohawk River is the most fordable for north-south travel, the City of Utica.
Oneida County is comprised of twenty-six towns and nineteen villages, each unique in their own right, adding diversity and flavor to Oneida County. We are home to three cities, Utica, the county's oldest and, Rome located on the sight of Revolutionary Fort Stanwix is the second largest city in area in New York State, and finally the City of Sherrill, which holds the distinction of being the smallest city in the New York State. Oneida County is the home of some fine institutions for higher education. The community is rich in the fine-art and museum exhibitions. The area ranks high in the nation for home affordability.
