Historic Ripley
Ripleys history began in 1812 when the village was founded by Colonel James Poage. A Virginian, Poage obtained the land on the banks of the Ohio River through a 1,000-acre land grant for his service in the Revolutionary War. Colonel Poage originally named the village Staunton in recognition of his hometown. Pioneer settlers of Ripley were predominately of Scotch and Irish descent. In the 1840-1850s a large influx of German immigrants settled in Ripley as the landscape reminded them of their German homeland. Their skills in agriculture, woodworking and business helped to make the village a vital port on the Ohio River. Ripley gained a reputation as a shipping port for the pork industry, second only to Cincinnati. Through the years tobacco has played a significant role in the history of Ripley. Ohios only tobacco market is located in Ripley and the cry of the auctioneers chant can be heard from November through February in the villages three burley tobacco warehouses. As the tobacco market becomes less profitable, local farmers are researching alternative crops and livestock, such as goats, green peppers, and wine grapes.

Historic Georgetown
Albert Woods, a native of Ireland, came to America when small, and located in the State of Pennsylvania. Upon arriving at maturity, he was married in that State, and removed to Georgetown, Ky., where he resided several years. Soon after Ohio was admitted into the Union, he came to it and located on the site of Georgetown; this was probably in 1803 or 1804. His son, Albert Woods, Jr., now a retired physician of Clermont County, was born here in October, 1805, and a daughter, now the wife of Peter L. Wilson, Esq., was born on the old place in 1808. In the latter year, Mr. Woods purchased 200 acres of land of Daniel Feagins and it was upon a portion of this purchase that he laid out the original town in 1819, probably naming it from his former residence, Georgetown, Ky. His son, James Woods, who laid out an addition to the town in 1820, settled here with his father, and there were several other children.
