Ohio Golf Courses : Clermont County
Established in December 1800, Clermont County is the seventh oldest of Ohios 88 counties, and is the eleventh oldest county in the Northwest Territory. Clermont is a French word meaning (clear mountains and hills), which described the area when it was first viewed by French explorers in the 1600s. Clermont County has a rich historical past and also deep in golf with many Ohio golf courses. A number of Native American tribes called this area home, including the Shawnee, Miami, Delaware, Mingo, Ottawa, Cherokee, and Wyandot. The last Native American village in the county was located two miles south of Marathon in Jackson Township, along the mouth of Grassy Run on the East Fork of the Little Miami River. The Wyandot lived there until 1811. That location was the site of the largest frontier battle in Clermont County, the Battle of Grassy Run, where pioneer Simon Kenton clashed with Native American warrior, Tecumseh, on April 10, 1792.
This area was also home to President and military hero, General Ulysses S. Grant, born in Point Pleasant on April 27, 1822. He became commander-in-chief of the U.S. Army during the Civil War, and was the eighteenth president of our country. His birthplace in Point Pleasant (originally a one room cabin) continues to welcome visitors today. Clermont County has many other fascinating historical facts including: the Bullskin Trail (once a major pathway for Native Americans) runs north and south through the county along State Route 133, and was also used by frontiersmen Simon Kenton and Daniel Boone on hunting and warfare expeditions; John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate raiders invaded the county in 1863; George Washington once owned three parcels of land in Clermont County. Clermont county has quite a bit of history, but you must see all the great Ohio golf courses in the area.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course is constructed in two styles. The front nine is a flat, links-style layout that plays wide-open, while the back is more hilly and plays tighter, favoring the shotmaker. Many of the greens on the back nine are tiered and sculpted from the natural terrain. The signature hole is 8, a 156-yard, par 3, which plays from an elevated tee to a green that is protected by woods and a drop-off to the rear. A creek winds its way through the design and comes into play on several holes. This is one of Greg Normans Ohio golf courses.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course is located in an isolated area and is home to an abundance of wildlife such as deer, fox, and little squirrels. The course is surrounded by a creek which comes into play on at least one hole. Most of the fairways are tree lined, and all of them are defined by a standard cut of rough. Many days during the year the wind blows really hard, so selecting the proper club is frequently an important aspect of the game. This course was built on natural hilly terrain just like so many Ohio golf courses, so you can expect many uneven lies. Tee times are only reserved for the weekends and guests must be accompanied by a club member. The mens tee also has a ladies course rating of 68.3 and slope of 113.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
Just like so many of the Ohio golf courses, this course was built on hilly terrain, so expect many uneven lies. The tree-lined fairways are narrow, and water hazards (lakes) come into play on at least five holes. The greens are small, fast, and loaded with subtle breaks. The course is well bunkered and places a premium on shot accuracy.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course features small greens and narrow fairways. The terrain is relatively flat and easy to walk, but some mounding can cause uneven lies. This club has hosted the Tri-State Invitational and the U.S. Amateur qualifier in 1994, one of many well know Ohio golf courses. Arthur Hills redesigned this course in 1984.
