Ohio Golf Courses Cuyahoga County Though not initially apparent - the city was surrounded by swampland and the harsh winters did not encourage settlement - the location proved providential. The city began to grow rapidly after the completion of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1832, turning the city into a key link between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes, and particularly once the city railroad links were added. In 1837, the city, then located on the eastern banks of the Cuyahoga River, nearly erupted into open warfare with neighboring Ohio City, Ohio (since annexed) over a bridge connecting the two. As a half-way point for iron ore coming from Minnesota across the Great Lakes and for coal and other raw materials coming by rail from the south, the site flourished. Cleveland also enjoyed its position as the major break-in-bulk center for Ohio.

Cleveland became one of the major manufacturing and population centers of the United States, home of numerous major steel firms. Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller made his fortune there. By 1920, it was the 5th largest city in the country. The city was also one of the centers of the national progressive movement, locally headed by Mayor Tom L. Johnson.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This club was established in 1889 and recognized by GOLF Magazine in their 1995 list of The First 100 Clubs In America. This private course is somewhat hilly and has an extremely high cut of rough. Locals say the fairways are narrow-to-tight, having been cut through a countryside setting. The superintendent maintains the course in meticulous condition. A creek comes into play on seven holes, and a large pond comes into play once. The greens are generally small, sloped, undulating, and described as definitely not flat. William S. Flynn and Howard Toomey redesigned the original holes and added some new ones in 1931. GOLFWEEK selected the course 71st among Americas 100 Best Classical Courses for 1998. GOLF Magazine rated it 89th among the Top 100 Courses in the U.S. for 1995, and 95th in 1997. Golf Digest also rated it as the 9th Best in State course from 1995 through 1998. This fairly flat municipal course is one of two in the city of Solon. The fairways and greens are well bunkered, and there are water hazards that come into play on most holes. Most of the greens and tee boxes are elevated and adorned with ornamental grasses and flowers. A scenic hole is 8, a 176-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot through the trees and over a lake to an elevated green that is well bunkered.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This facility has an eighteen hole regulation course and a nine hole par 3 course. The front nine on the Regulation Course is hilly and features large pine, maple, and oak trees lining its fairways. The Deer Lick Creek meanders through the course and comes into play on two holes. The most difficult hole, and according to locals, perhaps the toughest hole in all the Cleveland Metroparks, is 13, a 451-yard, par 4, requiring an uphill tee shot to a tree-lined, dogleg left fairway, then a long approach shot to an average-sized green. The back nine was built on gently rolling terrain, so expect uneven lies. Water hazards, similar to ones found in Florida, only come into play on two holes. This is one of six courses operated by the Cleveland Metroparks. The course expansion in 1989 (with the exception of holes 2 and 3, the gorge holes) was designed and constructed by the Cleveland Metroparks staff. A twenty-nine station driving range is available, and every can work on their short game by playing the Par 3 Course.

Rating: 72.7
Slope: 132
Status: Public
Season: March 15 thru December 30

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This Scottish links-style course starts both nines off with holes that play downhill and into a prevailing wind. Holes 2 and 12 have extremely large greens, so lagging your first putt may be more appropriate than trying to sink it. The course is surrounded by a park reservation, so if you hit off the fairway and through the rough, you'll find yourself deep into the woods. In addition, water hazards (a pond and creeks) come into play on six holes. Golf Digest once rated this course as one of the top seventy-five public courses in America. Cranes Cleveland Business News also rated it as one of the top courses in the state.

Springvale Golf Club

Address:
5871 Canterbury Rd
North Olmsted, OH 44070

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course has enough variety of terrain and hazards to challenge the most experienced of golfer. There are continuous cart paths throughout the course. The fairways are tree lined and moderately tight. Hole 11 is referred to as (the monster), a 515-yard, par 5, requiring an approach shot over a wide ravine to a well-bunkered and contoured green. Hole 16, a 423-yard, par 4, is unique because it has a waste bunker that runs down the entire right side of the fairway and is well bunkered on the left. This hole requires an approach shot over water to a well-bunkered green.

StoneWater Golf Club

Rating: 75.2
Slope: 139
Status: Semi-Private
Season: April 1 thru November 30

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course, which is located on 180 acres, is appropriate for all skill levels. The back nine was cut out of the natural woods, and the ponds, creeks and tee boxes are all rock lined, which is the courses signature. Water hazards, such as wetlands, ponds and creeks come into play on sixteen holes. The greens are large, fast and generously undulating. Among the notable holes on the front side is 3, a 201-yard, par 3, which carries water almost the entire route. Sand awaits on the left side for players who lose their nerve on the downswing. The most difficult hole on the back nine is 13, a 626-yard, par 5, which features two wetland areas that push out from the rough into the playing area. Balls coming to rest in wetland areas are considered lost and players are prohibited from entering. Both sides of the hole are tree lined.

Westlake Meadowood Golf Course

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course has an eighteen hole executive course and a nine hole regulation course. The Red and White courses are both executive courses. The Yellow Course is a regulation nine hole course. The combination Red/White Course provides eighteen holes of great practice for your short game. The Yellow Course is scenic and has water hazards that come into play on many holes. There are many trees lining the fairways that can cause you problems. The ladies tee off from the same set of tees as the men.

This traditional course is located in a wooded area. All the fairways are bordered by a standard cut of rough, and most of them are lined by trees. Water hazards come into play on a few holes. The small greens are difficult to read. Guests are not allowed to play unless accompanied by a club member. Another great one of the many Ohio golf courses.
