Ohio Golf Courses Jefferson County Jefferson County was named for Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, Secretary of State, and Vice President of the United States at the time of the county's creation. It was created July 29, 1797, by proclamation of Governor Arthur St. Clair. In 1786, the United States built Fort Steuben on a hill overlooking the Ohio River. The forts purpose was to protect the government surveyors mapping seven ranges of wilderness land from Indian attack. When the surveyors had completed their task, the two companies of troops were transferred to Fort Harmar. In 1794, the abandoned fort caught fire. In the meantime, a small cluster of homes had collected around the fort in 1787, which the residents named La Belle. In 1797, Jefferson County was created, and the site where La Belle stood was selected as the county seat. Bezaleel Wells and James Ross laid out a town around La Belle, whose name was subsequently changed to Steubenville in honor of the charred fort. During the first half of the nineteenth century, Steubenville was primarily a port town. However, in 1856, Frazier, Kilgore and Company erected a rolling mill (the forerunner of the areas steel mills) and the Steubenville Coal and Mining Company sank a coal shaft resulting in a new industrial base for the city and county. Around 1800, a group of Quakers founded the town of Mount Pleasant, which became a center for abolitionist activity. Besides being a primary stop on the Underground Railroad, Mount Pleasant in 1817 saw the publication of one of the first abolitionist newspapers in the United States, the (Philanthropist). In 1837, Ohio's first abolitionist convention was held in Mount Pleasant. Jefferson County was the birthplace of President Abraham Lincoln's secretary of war, Edwin M. Stanton, who was born in Steubenville on December 19, 1814. Now that we have seen a little of Jefferson County history, lets see all the great Ohio golf courses here.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This course was originally built in 1994 so its not one of the older Ohio golf courses, but an additional nine holes were added in 1999, giving the layout two different personalities. The front nine is fairly wide open and flat, while the back nine is more wooded and plays tighter. One challenging hole is 16, a 327-yard, par 4, featuring an elevated tee and a pond in front of the green. Gently rolling terrain makes this course enjoyable to walk.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This facility opened nine new holes in 1999 to increase its total to eighteen. The existing holes were built on rolling terrain, once again typical for Ohio golf courses, so you can expect many uneven lies. The newer nine, with the exception of two ponds, resembles the original nine holes. The greens are medium to large in size, and water hazards come into play on a five or six holes. A majority of the fairways are lined with trees.

Ohio Golf Courses Comments:
This very scenic course was built on rolling terrain, doesn’t that sound so very typical of Ohio golf courses, so you can expect some uneven lies. Nearly all the fairways are tree lined and bordered by a standard cut of rough, and the undulating greens are medium in size and speed. This course is home to an abundance of wildlife, such as deer and squirrels which is also very common of Ohio golf courses. Locals say that one of the best features is the fact that they are always going through some form of renovation in hopes of keeping the course in mint condition. Recently, they have added a new irrigation system, which keeps the entire course beautifully plush.

This very hilly course is known for its challenging par 3s. The fairways are tree lined and well bunkered. The greens are large, fast, well protected by sand bunkers, and in excellent condition. Water hazards come into play on four holes. This is one of the more challenging of the Ohio golf courses in Jefferson County.
