In the 1790s, a settlement was established at the confluence of the Licking and Muskingum Rivers as Colonel Ebenezer Zane and his son-in-law John McIntire blazed Zanes Trace, the original pioneer trail into the old Northwest Territory. Zane, a Revolutionary War veteran, was commissioned by the U.S. Congress to blaze a pathway into the rolling hills and the dense forests of the Ohio Valley, and to establish ferry crossings at three major rivers including the Muskingum. McIntire and Zane's brother Jonathan took responsibility for operating the ferry at the Muskingum River and they were the county's first settlers. A town laid out by McIntire called Westbourne quickly grew out of the settlement and in 1801 it was renamed Zanesville in honor of Colonel Zane. Transportation played a key role in the rich history and development of the community. Zanes Trace later became the National Road, the major east-west artery for trade and travel and one of the pioneer's main routes to the west throughout the 1800s. The Muskingum River with a canal, lock and dam system that is still used today transported steamboats and barges up from the Ohio. This eighteen hole links-style course is located in the gentle, rolling hills of Muskingum County. The rolling hills, is so typical of the many Ohio golf courses. The course has spacious greens, which each average 6,500 square feet, vary in shape and are gently contoured. The fairways are generous with accommodating landing areas. This course has received complimentary remarks on its ability to provide a challenge for its wide variance of golfing ability. The signature hole on this course is 9, a 392-yard, par 4, which has water bordering the right side of the fairway and green and out-of-bounds stakes on the left. A true tee shot is a must. A large sand bunker traces the contour of the back of the green.

This course requires shot accuracy due to a heavy cut of rough lining all of the fairways. The greens are hard to read because they are full of subtle breaks. In addition, water hazards come into play on five holes. Golf Digest rated this as the 19th Best in State of Ohio golf courses for 1995-96, and the 20th best for 1997-98. It was also rated as the Best Public Course in the state between 1993 and 1996. In addition, this course was rated 14th best under the category of Americas Top 75 Affordable Courses in their 1996 list of Americas Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play. The signature hole is 11, a 591-yard, par 5, featuring a design that plunges downhill and over a creek, then twists around stands of sycamores to a wide but shallow green. This hole was voted among The Best 18 Holes You Can Play by Golf Digest in 1997.

This is a hilly course which is common for Ohio golf courses and is with tree-lined fairways. There are three ponds that come into play. Some of the greens are elevated. The signature hole is 10, a 485-yard, par 5, with a double dogleg fairway and requiring a shot over water.

This course has been rated by GOLFWEEK as the 14th best course in the State of Ohio golf courses. The fairways are lined by trees and bordered by a multiple cut of rough. The small greens are slightly sloped however, numerous subtle breaks will test your putting abilities.
