Pennsylvania Golf Courses : Adams County
Created on January 22, 1800 and named in honor of President John Adams. Gettysburg, the county seat was incorporated as a borough on March 10, 1806. It was named for James Gettys a local landowner. Settled by migrants from both Maryland and eastern Pennsylvania, Adams has always had a strong German ethnic strain and a farm-based economy. Although it once led the state in wheat production, general farming eventually prevailed, and apples are now its most famous product. Even though John Studebaker’s wagon works gave his name to a major Detroit car manufacturer, the county has never been industrialized until recent decades. As a result, the population has grown slowly, until the last decade. Farms cover 56 percent of the land, and Adams has long led the state in fruit production; currently it produces over 40 percent of Pennsylvania’s harvest. It is also strong in wheat, barley, soybeans, and hay. Food processing businesses are very successful and this, with a strong publishing industry, wood products, and farmers supplies, accounts for Adams’s remarkable 59 percent increase in the value it has added to the nation’s economy by manufacturing over the five years from 1987 to 1992. The Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863, an irreparable loss for the Confederacy, spawned a large tourism industry. Gettysburg College, at first named Pennsylvania College, was founded in 1832. President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s farm near Gettysburg was his private residence during and after his presidency. Let’s see the Pennsylvania golf courses in Adams County.

Pennsylvania Golf Courses Comments:
This rolling course is considered (sneaky long) by players. The fairly undulating greens are fast, and the fairways have ample landing space. However, if you stray with your tee shot, two inches of rough line the fairways. Water comes into play on eight holes. The most difficult hole is 2, a 339-yard, par 4, requiring a tee shot out of a narrow chute and onto a landing area more than 200 yards out, where the fairway then doglegs ninety degrees to the left.

This club's pros consider this course to have a (big league) design. The large greens are fast, and the back nine is more hilly than the front nine. Several well-placed trees can hinder your shotmaking, but the fairways are typically wide open.

Pennsylvania Golf Courses Comments:
This southern Pennsylvania course was built on rolling farmland. Measuring nearly 6,700 yards from the back tees, this course offers open fairways, many of which are dogleg in configuration, a variety of challenging water hazards, which come into play on four holes, and strategically-placed trees throughout the layout. The greens are small and slow. The front nine is longer than the back, however, there are several holes on the back nine that require precise ball placement. A mixture of sand and grass bunkers add to the challenge of this course.

This course is known for its postage stamp-sized, undulating greens. The greens can be fast at times, especially in the summer months. The fairways are tree lined and have a primary and deep secondary cut of rough. The toughest hole is 8, a 440-yard, par 4, requiring a downhill tee shot. There is a creek running across the fairway about 290 yards from the tee box, and the green has sand bunkers on both sides.

Pennsylvania Golf Courses Comments:
This course's design includes tree-lined fairways bordered by a standard cut of rough. Approximately thirty percent of the terrain is hilly, so you can expect many uneven lies. The signature hole is 5, a 184-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot past trees and a water hazard to an elevated green which is well bunkered. Various water and natural hazards combine to make this a very demanding course.

Pennsylvania Golf Courses Comments:
This course is nestled in the rolling Pennsylvania hillside. The layout boasts scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the rolling terrain gives way to wide open fairways. The generous, very undulating greens are receptive and play very true. Several of the greens are cut directly from the surrounding red-rock cliffs, including 3, a 187-yard, par 3. This hole features a dramatic change in elevation from the tee to green, and a 35-foot cliff serves as a dramatic backdrop.
