Pennsylvania Golf Courses : Armstrong County
Created on March 12, 1800, from parts of Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Lycoming Counties and was named for General John Armstrong. It was attached to Westmoreland County until 1805. Kittanning, the county seat was incorporated as a borough on April 2, 1821, and derived its name from a Delaware Indian village at the same place. The area saw much fighting between settlers and Indians in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War. John Armstrong’s attack on the Indian village of Kittanning in 1756 proved that the Indians were not invincible. The territory was purchased from the Indians by the two Treaties of Fort Stanwix, 1768 (known as the New Purchase) and 1784 (known as the Last Purchase). The State’s third ranked bituminous coal producing county, Armstrong also has produced glass, clay, brick, and quarried stone. Most of the coal mines are subsurface. A brief oil boom occurred after 1865, and natural gas was produced long afterwards. Steel production was once important, but declined by the 1930s. This wide-open and hilly course has several water hazards and numerous trees that will affect your shots. This course is only open to Elks Club members and their guests. The course's signature hole is 6, a 400-yard, par 4, which requires a blind shot to the green.

The course features a mix of design styles. The front nine is relatively open and offers links style golf, while the back nine's tree lined fairways offer more of a traditional parkland feel. Water comes into play on three holes. From the raised greens, through the rolling fairways and up to the large, undulating and fast greens.

This can be a difficult course because its terrain is heavily wooded. The fairways are wide though, and the large greens have many subtle breaks that are hard to read. In addition, man-made lakes come into play on several holes. The signature hole is 4, a 393-yard, par 4, requiring a shot over water. The ladies' par is actually 77.

Beginners, juniors, and seniors will like this course because there aren't too many hazards and it's easy to walk. This par 3 course is a great place to bring your entire family. The signature hole is 7, which plays downhill to the green and has a scenic view of the local downtown district.
