Ping Golf, founded by Karsten Solheim. Karsten was born on September 15, 1911 in Bergen Norway. As a little boy he moved to the United States with his parents and settled in Seattle Washington. His father was a shoemaker and Karsten learned the family trade. But at an early age Karsten had visions of becoming a mechanical engineer. He attended the University of Washington during the depression days, but a lack of funds forced him to the University.

Karsten married Louise Crozier on June 20, 1936. He resumed engineering training through a college extension course. World War II created a need for for defense workers and Karsten moved to San Diego, California, where he advanced with Ryan Aeronautical Corporation to a position of flight research engineer. It was there that he helped develop the first aircraft tricycle landing gear and the Fireball jetfighter. Six years later, he joined Convair as a project engineer for the Atlas missile’s first ground guidance system.

In 1953, he began with GE in New York as a mechanical design engineer helping to design the first rabbit ears antenna, as well as sophisticated radar and guidance systems. It was here that he first began to play golf at age 42. In 1956 Karsten was sent to GE’s computer lab at Palo Alto, California and then in 1959 to their Phoenix computer facility.

Karsten wanted to improve his golf game and became interested in designing a better putter, since that is where he needed the most help. He began to apply a few scientific principles to the design. In his garage in Redwood City, California, he crafted the first heel-toe balance and perimeter weighted putter. The PING putter was named because of the unique pinging sound it made when striking a golf ball.

In 1966, Karsten designed the Anser putter and sales soared. The idea came to him, as inspiration often does, in a flash. He sketched the design on the dusk jacket of a 78 rpm record. All he needed now was a name. Since it was the answer to a particular vexing problem, putting, his wife Louise suggested they name it Answer. Karsten liked the name, but felt it would be too long to fit on a putter. With a deadline looming to get the design to the engraver’s shop, Louise then said, leave out the W. Which is what they did. Julius Boros won the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open in 1967 with Solheim’s putter. The Anser went on to become the winningest putter in golf with over 500 wins.

Anser series putters feature optimum line of sight, perimeter weighting, cavity back design and a low center of gravity. It’s no exaggeration to say that innovations changed putting forever. Karsten’s theory of heel-toe balance and perimeter weighting revolutionized the game of golf. He pioneered the use of investment casting in the manufacture of golf clubs. His PING Eye 2 Irons became the number one seller in the history of golf.

Custom fitting was introduced when Karsten began calibrating loft and lie angles for Tour professionals in the early 60s. This lead to the development of the PING Color Code Fitting System. Karsten was the first to incorporate heat treating into the club-making process, allowing clubheads to be adjusted for loft and lie.

The distinction between manufacturing clubs and assembling them was not lost on PING inventor Karsten Solheim more than 40 years ago. Nor is it today. The family-owned company prides itself on closely controlling the entire clubmaking process.

Ping Golf begin in design and engineering where new ideas are tested every day with the goal to design the perfect custom-fit golf club.

Those ideas become a reality when molds for clubheads are machined, then transferred to the foundry for investment casting. Next they are heat treated, then on to assembly for component matching and personalization.

Karsten sought to advance women’s professional golf and began by co-sponsoring LPGA tournaments in Oregon, Arizona and Massachusetts. In 1990, he deepened his involvement by founding the Solheim Cup, a biennial transatlantic team competition played on alternate continents and staged by the LPGA and the Ladies European Tour.

Karsten’s legacy lives on today at PING Golf, where people are passionate about the game of golf.

The G2i Series of golf putters combines the performance of perimeter weighting with the soft feel of a proprietary insert material known as Polypurfelan. The urethane-based material produces a softer insert that creates a pleasing feel and sound. Additional performance comes from the increased perimeter weighting and lower center of gravity achieved through redistribution of the mass removed to create the insert cavity.
