Giles County was established in 1806 from Montgomery, Monroe, Wythe, and Tazewell counties. The county is named for William Branch Giles who was born in Amelia County in 1762. Giles became a lawyer and from there was elected to the United States House of Representatives where he served from 1790 to 1815. He also served on the Virginia General Assembly from 1816 to 1822. In 1827, he was elected Governor. In all, he served his nation and state around a total of forty years. Giles County is the location of Mountain Lake, one of only two natural fresh water lakes in Virginia. This course has open fairways and fast greens. There is water that comes into play on eight holes. The fairways are open, but there are out of bounds, woods or water on every hole. Guests must be accompanied by a club member in order to play.

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This is a beautiful, scenic course and one of the most challenging in Central Virginia. Several water hazards and numerous sand bunkers come into play, and most of the tree-lined fairways are rolling and have dogleg configurations. The greens are heavily undulated and fast. The signature hole is 4, a 165-yard, par 3, which has water surrounding more than half of the green. Hole 17, a 144-yard, par 3, plays uphill and over water to a shallow green. Make sure to use enough club to carry the green or you will be left with a blind, uphill chip shot.
