Giles County was established in 1806 from Montgomery, Monroe, Wythe, and Tazewell counties. The county is named for William Branch Giles who was born in Amelia County in 1762. Giles became a lawyer and from there was elected to the United States House of Representatives where he served from 1790 to 1815. He also served on the Virginia General Assembly from 1816 to 1822. In 1827, he was elected Governor. In all, he served his nation and state around a total of forty years. Nestled in the breathtaking Shenandoah Valley lies a place steeped in heritage, from pre-Colonial times to modern-day history makers. This shotmaker's course, nestled at the base of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, features small greens and tree-lined fairways. The signature hole is 13, a 160-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot over water to the green. Another tough hole is 4, a 340-yard, par 4, which, the course professional said, is (the most demanding hole) he has ever played. There are no sand bunkers or water hazards on this hole, but it is essential to hit the landing area, which is about 180 yards out. If this is not accomplished, the ball will roll into a ravine. The green is surrounded by trees. Overall, water hazards come into play on four holes.

This course was built on hilly terrain so there will be some uneven lies. The fairways are fairly wide with some being tree lined. Water hazards come into play on seven different holes, and sand bunkers are located throughout the design. The greens are large, undulating and generally fast.
