Virginia Golf Courses Loudoun County Loudoun County is located in Northern Virginia, just 35 miles west of Washington, D.C. in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It borders both West Virginia and Maryland. Home to two international airports, Loudoun is easy to get to from all parts of the globe. It is also accessible via numerous Interstate Highways and US Highways. Loudoun County was established in 1757 from Fairfax County. The county is named for John Campbell, Fourth Earl of Loudoun and Governor of Virginia from 1756–59. Western settlement began in the 1720s and 1730s with Quakers, Scots-Irish, Germans and others moving south from Pennsylvania and Maryland and by English and African slaves moving upriver from Tidewater. By the time of the American Revolution, it was the most populous county in Virginia. During the War of 1812, important Federal documents and government archives were evacuated from Washington and stored at Leesburg for safe keeping. Local tradition holds that these documents were stored at Rokeby House and thus that Leesburg was briefly the capitol of the United States. Let’s see the Virginia Golf Courses in Loudoun County.

Algonkian Regional Park Golf Course was designed by architect Ed Ault and opened for play in 1962. The fairways are tree lined, and the large, undulating greens are moderate in speed.

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This course was built on rolling terrain that was once farm land. The front nine has more wide open fairways than the back nine, while the back has the tree windbreaks previously planted for protecting the crops. All the greens, as well as some fairways, are well bunkered. The greens vary in size, and some of them are elevated. The most difficult hole is 7, a 586-yard, par 5, requiring a straightaway tee shot to a two-tiered fairway, plus an approach shot to one of the elevated greens.

This championship course covers over 118 acres of rolling landscape. The natural rock formations and walls, along with the densely wooded areas, plus meandering creeks were all integrated into the design of this course. The Washington Times calls it, (a snazzy, eighteen hole smorgasbord of sly greens, generous spaces, and tree-framed valleys).

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This facility opened a second eighteen hole course in 1999, the River Course, to give it thirty-six holes. The River Course is links in design, with considerably more water affecting play than the original Island Course. The signature hole is 12, a 344-yard, par 4, which has water that runs down the entire left side of the dogleg left fairway. A bunker guards the right side of the fairway. Golfers have the option of using a driver to carry the bunker, or an iron to lay up short. The front nine on the Island Course is a links-style design and the back nine is traditional in design. The course has greens and tree-lined fairways.

Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club

Address:
41601 Raspbery Drive
Leesburg, VA 20176-6271

Phone: 703-779-2555
Holes: 18
Par: 72
Rating: 74.3
Slope: 134
Status: Semi-Private
Season: Open All Year

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
The links-style course has plenty of undulation that will cause uneven lies. The course wanders through Raspberry Plain, which was established in the 18th Century as one of the most productive plantations in all of Virginia. A water hazard comes into play on just one hole, but there are stacked-sod sand bunkers (stacked sod lines the surrounding walls of the sand bunker) throughout the design. Wildlife occasionally seen on the course includes deer or fox. Rock outcroppings are popular in this area, so are Civil War era stone walls, which were reconstructed on holes 3 and 9.

Leesburg, VA 20176-3900

Phone: 703-779-1033
Holes: 18
Par: 72
Rating: 74.3
Slope: 141
Status: Private
Season: Open All Year

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This course stretches along two miles of the Potomac River, northwest of Washington D.C. Five holes on the course border the Potomac and two holes mingle with Goose Creek. The course is very scenic with many elevation changes. The signature hole is 15, a 391-yard, par 4, which requires a tee shot over a large cavern. The second shot necessitates careful navigation around the Potomac, which borders the green.

South Riding Golfers' Club

Address:
43137 Golf View Drive

Phone: 703-327-3673
Holes: 18
Par: 72
Rating: 74.5
Slope: 133
Status: Public
Season: Open All Year

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This course, which opened August 1, 1997, features wide fairways, some lined with trees. The terrain is flat, but you may find a few uneven lies. Water hazards come into play on fourteen holes. The greens are small, sloped and fairly slow. The signature hole is 3, a 543-yard, par 5, which plays to a straight fairway, but the green is protected by a creek in front, two bunkers on the right and one bunker on the left. The green is also sloped from the back to the front.

Holes: 18
Par: 54
Rating: N/A
Slope: N/A
Status: Semi-Private
Season: Open All Year

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This par 3 course requires accurate shotmaking abilities because a fence (considered as an out-of-bounds barrier) lines four holes. In addition, water hazards come into play on three other holes. The fairways are large, and the greens are fast.

Stoneleigh Golf Club

Address:
35271 Prestwick Court
Round Hill, VA 20141-2504

Phone: 540-338-4653
Holes: 18
Par: 72

Slope: 136

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This course, a Scottish links-style design, provides a beautiful view of the Shenandoah Mountains. There is water coming into play on four holes, plus the some of the undulating greens are double-tiered. The fairways are tree lined, and greenside sand bunkers are common place. The course is located about fifteen miles west of Leesburg. Maki has incorporated Civil War features that date back to 1850, including a manor house that was converted into the pro shop, plus an abandoned stone house on hole 13, a 170-yard, par 3, which was once a toll gate for the old Snickersville Turnpike.

Westpark Golf Club

Address:
59 Clubhouse Drive SW
Leesburg, VA 20175-4201

Phone: 703-777-7023
Holes: 18
Par: 71
Rating: 71.1
Slope: 121
Status: Semi-Private
Season: Open All Year

Virginia Golf Courses Comments:
This well-maintained course isn't very difficult. The fairways are open, and the somewhat undulating greens are medium in speed and size. The terrain is rolling, and there is a creek meandering throughout the course that comes into play on thirteen holes.
