Virginia Golf Courses : New Kent County
New Kent County was formed in 1654 by the House of Burgesses when it was carved from what was then York County. New Kent’s original land area included what is now the Counties of King William, King and Queen, Spotsylvania, Louisa and parts of Caroline, Hanover and James City Counties. In fact, in the very early years of our country, New Kent County extended to the (edges of the frontier) and therefore, theoretically speaking, to the Pacific Ocean. New Kent is the birthplace of two First Ladies, Martha Washington and Letitia Christian Tyler. It was also the location of the longhouses of Chief Powhatan and his daughter, Pocahontas. Bacon’s Rebellion ended on New Kent soil in 1676. Civil War troops marched and camped in New Kent, and the Washington-Rochambeau route winds through the New Kent countryside. The Golf Club at Brickshire is a championship eighteen-hole track designed by the team of Curtis Strange and Tom Clark of Ault, Clark, & Associates. Brickshire is located 25-minutes from Colonial Williamsburg. The course winds through land full of swales and mountainous textures, and despite a length of 7,291-yards from the tips, Brickshire maintains its playability. Several of the holes on this course were designed to mimic notable holes from other top shelf courses throughout the world. These include 1, a faithful representation of 3 at Augusta National; and 9 mirrors St. Andrews 14, complete with the notorious (Hell Bunker). This course has been described as (extremely long, but extremely fair), and there are several sets of tees allowing golfers to tailor the course to suit their game.

This course is modeled after the Irish links-style courses. Target rocks provide direction to blind fairways, pot bunkers are deep and penal, and the giant greens are very slick. Hole 2, a 537-yard, par 5, features a nearly ninety-degree dogleg right fairway. The second shot offers the opportunity to hit over the waste area to the green or play it safely to the left.
